Three Time Gestational Carrier Shares Her Story

Why? It seems like such a simple question. One that I have been asked many times. Not just “Why would you want to become a surrogate?” but also “Why would you decide to do it three times?”

It’s a hard concept to put into words. The best way I can explain it is a calling. I remember watching friends and family members struggle with fertility and thinking, “I would carry for them in a heartbeat.” One by one they conceived, adopted or chose another road to travel, and I thought my chance had passed. When I started hearing about women carrying for couples they didn’t know, I knew God had opened a new door for me.

I have had three amazing journeys helping to grow three wonderful families. Lumping them together in one sentence like that implies that every journey is the same. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s true that I have carried three times, but that does not encompass my whole story. I’ve actually been matched five times.

My First Journey

The first couple, after trying for years to conceive their second child, found out they were pregnant while we were in the process of negotiating the surrogacy agreement. We all laughed at how close they were to having twins carried by two different people.

My first successful journey was for a single woman who had a complete hysterectomy. She lived in several places that weren’t surro-friendly. When she moved to the U.S., she started the search for someone to help grow her family. After transferring only one embryo, she was blessed with a beautiful baby boy.

My Second Journey

My second journey was for a couple that struggled with infertility for many years. Another surrogate carried their daughter but was unable to carry for them again. Having both been through the process before, we all were able to set our worries aside and focus on our friendship. Even three years after giving birth to their son, and living in different countries, we are still close. I feel blessed to be a part of their story.

Then I was matched with an adorable young couple who wanted to start a family so badly. The wife has a heart condition that makes it impossible for her to carry. There were three unsuccessful attempts for me to carry for them before they decided to try a different path. It hurt my heart to see their disappointment after every negative pregnancy test.

My Third Journey

I almost decided to end my story there, but God kept tugging at my heart. So, I am currently carrying for a family who had embryos left from previous IVF attempts, but she is considered too high risk to carry again. This one is a girl! All of my other pregnancies have been boys so this one is extra special. The family and I are praying for an uneventful delivery.

Over and over I have heard how much of a blessing I must be to the families I have carried for. I know that they all are extremely grateful, but I think I have been blessed most of all. Being able to help someone do something that they cannot do themselves is a miracle in itself, and the contentment it brings me is indescribable.

Although I may not choose to carry again, I hope that this is not the end of my surrogacy story.
